Neschener Climb – Cols de Cologne

Its fantastic location in the valley of the Dhünn makes the "Altenberger Dom" a popular excursion destination. For us Rhenish mountain goats, however, the cathedral is only a minor matter. Because here there are two attractive climbs to master, both of which were already part of the route of “Rund um Köln”: the ascent from Altenberg to Blecher and the - in our opinion more attractive - up to Neschen at the foot of the Dhünntalsperre.

The first kilometer leads through dense forest and comes up with three full-blown hairpin bends and steep incline percentages. If you look back, you look at the Altenberg Cathedral, if you look ahead, you see how the numbers on the speedometer are getting lower and lower.

We reach an intermediate plateau that offers a little relaxation before the road towards Grimberg climbs moderately again. At the height of Hüttchen there is a short descent: it is essential to take the momentum with you on the final climb to Neschen!

Not only cyclists have a fine nose for serpentines. Especially on sunny weekends there are lots of motorbikes on the route - so watch out!

The switchbacks from Schmeisig down to Altenberg are a real highlight. Beautiful, quick descent through the shady forest, hairpin bends and a great view of the Altenberg Cathedral at the end. Class!

Nice climb. In the curves you sometimes have the feeling that you are meeting yourself😄. Meetings with a car or motorcycle become problematic. Some underestimate the curves, others cut them🤐. You have to pay attention to both! 👍😎

Very nice ascent, at the beginning a bit steeper, but this relativises again from the middle. However, you have to be careful in normal traffic, because some motorcyclists are there at the weekend, so do not cut corners.

Nice climbs and curves. So you have to watch out for other road users who underestimate this. Once you are up there you will be presented with great views, e.g. of the cathedral. Among other things, also sections of the traditional race around Cologne.

The ascent from Altenberg Cathedral to Neschen is a nice stretch of road. Three hairpin bends, excellent asphalt and a pleasant slope.

Starts out crisp and rolls out quite relaxed. It's really fun to shoot up here!

Quite pleasant to drive, never too steep and only a few sharp changes in the incline.

Nice route, watch out in good weather !! Motorcyclists are numerous. Good inclines, up & down. Some climbs. Routes have already been completed at RUK (around Cologne).
