Its stunning location in the Dhünn Valley makes the "Altenberg Cathedral" a popular destination. For us Rhineland mountain goats, however, the cathedral is only a minor concern. There are two attractive climbs to tackle here, both of which were already part of the "Rund um Köln" route: the climb from Altenberg to Blecher and the – in our opinion, more attractive – climb to Neschen at the foot of the Dhünn Dam.

The first kilometer leads through dense forest and features three full-blown hairpin bends and steep gradients. Looking back, you see the Altenberg Cathedral; looking ahead, you see the numbers on the speedometer getting lower and lower.

We reach an intermediate plateau that offers a bit of respite before the road climbs moderately again towards Grimberg. At the level of the hut, there's a short descent: be sure to carry that momentum over to the final climb to Neschen!

It's not just cyclists who have a keen eye for switchbacks. Especially on sunny weekends, the route is packed with motorbikes – so watch out!

The switchbacks from Schmeisig down to Altenberg are a real highlight. Beautiful, quick descent through the shady forest, hairpin bends and a great view of the Altenberg Cathedral at the end. Class!

Great curve road through the forest. Beautiful views of the Altenberg Cathedral.
