Surrounded by green meadows and forests, an imposing Christian building sits enthroned on the western edge of the Bergisches Land: the Altenberg Cathedral, also known as the Bergischer Dom, has stood in the municipality of Odenthal since the 13th century. The Cistercian monastery, as part of which the cathedral was built, even dates back to 1133. And the impressive Gothic-style building still holds a record today: the west window, which was created around 1400 and contains a depiction of heavenly Jerusalem, is the largest church window north of the Alps. Apart from the magnificent window, the cathedral is otherwise rather plain.
