The written history of the Monnikerhoeve or Grote farm dates back to the 8th century. Between the 13th and 18th centuries, this estate was owned by the nuns of the Abbey of Maagdendaal in Oplinter. During the French rule (1794-1815) the estate fell into private hands. The Meerhout Brigand Leader Jan Grietens lived in these 18th-century buildings until he had to go into hiding from French soldiers due to the Boer War (1798). The domain is in private hands and not accessible.
