The bridge is part of the railway connection (Salzburg–)Schwarzach-St. Veit–Badgastein–Villach–Aßling–Trieste, which was completely rebuilt at the beginning of the 20th century by the Imperial and Royal Railway Ministry in Vienna and completed in 1908. At that time it was collectively known as the Tauern Railway or the New Alpine Railway.
