Anyone who has a thing for chapels might want to follow the Kapelletjespad (cycling and walking route) of Gingelom and will find a field chapel from 1930 in Mielen, built for the Fransen family from Sint-Truiden. That's what the sign says - and a little more (see photo).

This field chapel was built in an extremely charming location at the 'disappeared' intersection of Kerkomstraat and a former sunken road ('Luitstraet'). The part of this sunken road towards Borlo, from the chapel to Mielenstraat, is a nicely accessible walking path. The chapel was built around 1930 by the owners of the nearby grove, namely the Fransen family, living 'In den Blauwe Hond' in Sint-Truiden, out of devotion to Our Lady and to invoke Mary's blessing. On a red painted concrete base stands a white column cemented from concrete blocks with false joints topped by a red painted concrete niche. In front of the building, a bed bordered with cobblestones seems to be buried under a proliferation of grass. A stray poplar next to the chapel also seems to be one of Mother Nature's whims. In the niche, safely behind bars and glass, we find a statue of a crowned Our Lady with Child, where the composition with the Flemish Lion reminds us of the statue in the chapel of Our Lady of Assistance in Buvingen.
