Together with the Saalbachtal, the Gelpetal forms a wooded local recreation area in the south of the city of Wuppertal. Almost the entire course of the Gelpe and Saalbach streams has been designated as a nature reserve and fauna-flora habitat for the Gelpe and Saalbach valley watercourse system, despite its former industrial use. The nature reserves in Wuppertal cover an area of around 133 hectares. A non-profit association is committed to maintaining and caring for the Gelpetal nature reserve.
