Roald Amundsen began his last expedition in Tromsø. In 1928, the famous polar explorer set off for the North Pole to rescue Umberto Nobile, whose airship had crashed during an Arctic expedition. Amundsen probably died during this rescue attempt not far from Bear Island, about halfway between the North Cape and Spitsbergen. Neither he nor his companions ever reappeared; only parts of his flying boat were found a short time later.

At Prostneset stands the statue of the polar hero Roald Amundsen. The statue was unveiled on 16 July 1937, the day when Amundsen would have turned 65. The unveiling of the monument to Roald Amudsen was carried out by Helmer Hansen. The park at Prostneset was originally laid out in 1927 and in connection with the unveiling of the Amundsen statue the square was given a new name and design. The park was then laid out as a “Pole Sector” with a curved front along the old beach edge towards the steamship quay.

Roald Amundsen had a close relationship with Tromsø, here he started his journey with “Maud” to conquer the North Pole, and it was from Tromsø that he started his final journey when he took off in the flying boat Latham on the afternoon of 18 June 1928. The park also houses Latham – the memorial to Latham and the crew who disappeared in 1928 while searching for polar explorer Umberto Nobile.
