Wayside shrine "Holy Kilian" by Gustav Nonnenmacher 1972

The wayside shrine, first mentioned in 1650, is a testament to religious customs. It became a place of worship for pilgrims on the Rhenish-Hessian Way of St. James. In 1972 the old wayside shrine, which can still be seen in the Abenheim Museum, was replaced by the "Holy Kilian", a sculpture made of shell limestone by the Worms sculptor Gustav Nonnenmacher.

The patron saint of winegrowers, who is otherwise rather unusual in our area, blesses passers-by with a raised hand. As a bishop, he is equipped with a miter and staff, and next to him are vines and grapes as an indication of his special function.
