In one of the few hills of the La Mancha plain stands the unexpected wall of Uclés and its monastery. One of the most surprising and least known tourist destinations in central Spain, whose role in history is remarkable.

This enclave was built on a Muslim fortress reconquered by the Christians on the then border with the Arab kingdom. In 1174 it was ceded to the order of Santiago by King Alfonso VIII of Castile with the aim of defending the region from Muslim attacks. He gave them ownership of the castle and the town of Uclés, with all its land, vineyards, meadows, pastures, streams, mills, fisheries, entrances and exits.

This fortress was the first mother house of the Order of Santiago, a religious and military institution whose mission was to protect the roads for the smooth flow of pilgrims. A large part of the Christian military defense was centralized from here, until the end of the reconquest, in the 15th century.

Today the building is a cultural center where exhibitions, concerts and guided tours are held that keep its heritage alive.

The Monastery welcomes you at the top of the village with a stunning view from the road leading to Uclés. After a long bike ride, it is a good reward.
