One of Germany's most architecturally extraordinary churches can be found in Hanau's Neustadt district: the Walloon-Dutch Church, now partially a ruin and a memorial following its destruction in World War II. The building was constructed between 1600 and 1608 as a massive double church. It was intended to serve as a place of worship for the Walloon and Dutch religious refugees for whom Count Philipp Ludwig II of Hanau-Münzenberg had the Hanau Neustadt planned starting in 1597. Within the structure, the larger, Walloon church formed a dodecagon, the smaller, Dutch church an octagon. Both parts of the building were interlocked. Between the two churches stood the octagonal tower, which, however, was relatively subordinate to the large hipped roofs of the round churches. During World War II, the double church was destroyed by air raids – like the entire Hanau city center – down to its outer walls. Only the smaller, formerly Dutch half of the church was rebuilt in the 1950s. The larger, Walloon one remained as a ruin and memorial.

Despite the destruction of a monument in Hanau on Französische Allee, which was redesigned and we now like it very much. In 2022 it celebrated its 425th year

One of Hanau's landmarks. The church itself is still in use. It has existed since the 16th century, and the surrounding square has been beautifully landscaped.
