Bike Touring Highlight
After the end of basalt mining in the 1980s, a lake landscape was created between Steinheim and Dietesheim with a total area of more than 60 hectares, including around 20 hectares of water. The absolute highlight is the narrow bridge at a dizzying height between the largest lakes, the Vogelsberger See and the Oberwaldsee. And one more request: to protect the flora and fauna, please stay on the paths in the Oberwaldsee nature reserve.

After the quarries were no longer managed, they were renatured and turned into the beautiful nature reserve we have today.

The different paths around the lakes are worthwhile, whether on foot or by bike.

The bridge is one of the highlights in this area worth seeing and hiking.

An interesting bridge. Unfortunately the place is overcrowded (especially when the weather is nice). With the bike it is only possible to push the bike anyway - but even as a pedestrian you are not comfortable on the bridge.

The bridge was the destination of our bike tour.In retrospect, however, I have to say that all of the lakes there are also worth the trip. A very beautiful piece of earth. :)

Incredible: Miniature of the Elbe (sandstone) mountains in the plain. Popular excursion destination, but everything that reminds of a picnic or swimming is prohibited. (I was here during Corona times, but looks like the warning signs are always there). The biosphere is certainly too sensitive for bathing; the water probably has no drain.

The bridge was the reason for our trip. We were very curious about it.The bridge is a real highlight, but just as great are the many lakes and the beautiful paths that we discovered here in the local recreation area.As a tip. Better to go on a bike ride when the weather is a bit overcast. We were there on Saturdays in sunshine and heat, it was incredibly busy. On the bike you felt more like a troublemaker. A little further away it was quieter and more pleasant.

The canyon bridge crossing is passable for bicycles and pedestrians and is on the route that leads through the beautiful local recreation area of the Dietesheim quarries...
• Name: Canyon Footbridge
• Design: steel girder bridge
• Total length: unknown
• Width: about 3m
• Height: approx. 14 m
• Construction time: 1984
• Use: public pedestrian and bicycle bridge
After the end of basalt quarrying in 1982, an impressive lake landscape with a total area of more than 61 hectares was created here, more than a third of which is deep blue water. In addition to the largest lakes, the Vogelsberger See and the Oberwaldsee, the charming landscape is complemented by a number of smaller lakes. High cliffs can be admired as bizarre rock formations that are unique in the Rhine-Main region. In 1984, bicycle and hiking trails were created around the recreation area, which lead visitors past the beautiful vantage points of the NEG. Since then, there has also been a wooden footbridge (called Canyon Bridge) between Vogelsberger See and Oberwaldsee, which is certainly a highlight with its dominance...🚴♂️

Beautifully landscaped lakes...quiet and a nice destination

Not suitable for racing bikes, otherwise ideal for all types of bikes. Nice and cool in summer with high temperatures, but overcrowded at weekends. Rather quiet during the week. Also good to drive in autumn/winter and not overcrowded with people. If you want, you can bike for up to 3-4 hours at a normal pace and double trails. It's a very large area. My home route, summer and winter.
