... just the game of the cones in the Rhön

The Hessian Skittles is an arrangement of cone-shaped volcanic mountains in the northwestern, flattest part of the Rhön in eastern Hesse. The impressive accumulation of volcanic cones is located in the districts of Hersfeld-Rotenburg and Fulda in the northwestern part of the Kuppenrhön east of Eiterfeld and south of Schenklengsfeld. In the midst of all these hilltops lies the town of Grossentaft.
The core of these crests, which are called Hessisches Kegelspiel because of their uniformity and the number of mountains, consists of mostly hexagonal basalt columns that were formed when the lava cooled.
According to legend, giants operated a bowling alley here, the Stoppelsberg represented the ball. The Soisberg was supposed to be the king. The 25 meter high observation tower on the Soisberg is affectionately known as "The Crown of Hessian Skittles".
