How can a building be one of the oldest in the city and still be very much alive? The castle of the Dukes of Brabant shows how this should be done. Its history goes back a long way, to the 13th century, when the monument was still the country residence of the Brabant dukes. Now the court is housed there.

During the Eighty Years' War it was hit by a hundred cannon shots, deterioration followed in the eighteenth century and two centuries later there was talk of demolition.
