From the 16th century, local farmers flooded the Broekmeers sub-area in winter. In the spring the locks were closed and they could count on a good hay yield, thanks to the fertile silt that remained on the grasslands. Due to the increasing pollution of the Scheldt, the system fell into disuse in the course of the 20th century. Today, the combination of wet grasslands, reed and alder swamp forest attracts numerous meadow birds. The lapwing and the black-tailed godwit are especially common in Broekmeers.
