As a memorial to the many dead, such cenotaphs or war memorials remain very important to this day. "Now, Lord, you let your servant depart in peace, as you have said..." says the so-called "Hymn of Simeon" (Luke 2:29). However, the people commemorated here did not depart in peace, but became victims of war and tyranny.

Many places and monuments encountered along the way are a testament – still significant and relevant today – to the horrors of war and tyranny. They all have two essential functions, and this continues anew for each generation:

-1- To commemorate and remember the victims

-2- To remind us of the need to maintain peace

The war memorial is dedicated to the fallen soldiers from Hemmerich and Kardorf who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. The memorial was inaugurated on September 15, 1884. The inauguration was celebrated with great fanfare, as the Bonner Zeitung reported at the time.

The mayor and the head of the Kardorf-Hemmerich community attended, patriotic songs were sung, and speeches were given. The memorial's purpose is not only to remember the deceased, but also to serve as a reminder that future generations should also make their sacrifices for the fatherland.

The unveiling ceremony concluded with a celebratory dinner and the nighttime illumination of the memorial. Source: Information board on site.

"The memorial to the fallen of the First World War was formerly located in the parish church and was later moved to Jennerstrasse. Due to its components borrowed from the sacred building, this memorial is not suitable for outdoor installation. The memorial, formerly attached to the church wall, now stands on two pedestals, each bearing the years 1914 and 1918. Above it, on a stone slab, is the actual memorial. On the narrow slab, there is a dedication. Above, between four pillars, the three round arches support three marble slabs bearing the names of the fallen; the names are painted in gold. Above it, a cornice with two pillars supporting a triple arch, below which is the sculpture of a kneeling soldier with a steel helmet, leaning on a sword; oak leaves between his legs. In the gable above the arches is an Iron Cross. The name of the sculptor, J. Linden, is inscribed on the base plate at the bottom right."

        Inscriptions:

To our fallen heroes, vowed by the Municipality
