The pond was created in the 13th century by Herrenalber monks. These maintained a farmyard in Oberderdingen and operated it as a fishpond. Around the lake, which is today in a conservation area, you will find the "Brown Cyprus grass" or the "Radiant Bidentate".

The landscape protection area is 15.2 hectares and is located in the natural area Strom-Heuchelberg. 9.6 ha of these belong to the Fauna-Flora-Habitat area 7018-341 Stromberg.
In and around the lake you will find special plant species such as the "Brown Cyprus grass" or the "Radiant Bidentate".
The pond was created in the 13th century by Herrenalber monks. These maintained a farmyard in Oberderdingen and operated it as a fishpond. Until the construction of the high-speed line Mannheim - Stuttgart he was used for it.
Meanwhile, he is considered a "sky pond", i. he gets his water mainly from rainfall. A regular fishing and discharge as before will no longer take place.
The landscape conservation area was registered in July 1949 and is the oldest protected area in the district of Karlsruhe.
On 22 June 2009, the lake was drained (a so-called "Sömmerung"), already about 10 days later it was empty, much faster than expected. Between 50,000 and 60,000 fish were salvaged, including many walruses and sunbeams. Thereafter, the digested sludge dried out and mineralized. Experts hope for a long-term improvement of the ecological situation.

Beautiful lake that was once used by monks for fish farming. When we were there the water was missing. It was drained in December.
