The Mittelriede is an artificial creek branch of the Wabe about six kilometers long in today's urban area of Braunschweig, which mainly flows parallel to the Wabe and flows into the Schunter near Querum.
Due to the parallel course to the honeycomb, it is assumed that the Mittelriede is a body of water artificially created in the early Middle Ages. It was probably created by the monks of the Riddagshausen monastery to irrigate and drain the Riddagshausen fish ponds. The 12th to 13th century is assumed to be the period of origin.
