A large portion of the Heidekrautbahn main line is still occasionally used for shunting operations to the Stadler company premises. However, to accommodate passenger train service, initially at 60-minute intervals and later at 30-minute intervals, the infrastructure must be comprehensively upgraded.

To accommodate the significantly increased number of trains on the line, crossing tracks will be re-established or newly installed at Berlin-Rosenthal station, Schildow station, and the Mühlenbecker See depot. At these points, oncoming trains can pass each other. In order to increase the speed from the current maximum of 25 km/h for shunting operations to up to 80 km/h for the hydrogen railcars, the superstructure must first be upgraded.

In addition, the total of 17 level crossings – i.e., where rail and road traffic intersect – must be technically secured. Noise protection measures for the immediate residents will also be implemented as part of the reactivation. More information about the planned expansion measures can be found in the Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn project film: .

The Heidekrautbahn is a railway line that runs from northern Berlin via Basdorf to the Oberhavel and Barnim districts in Brandenburg. The name Heidekrautbahn derives from the fact that many Berliners used the line for excursions to the Schorfheide, and the terminus of the line, the town of Groß Schönebeck, is considered the gateway to the Schorfheide.

There is a well-frequented cycle path with immaculate asphalt right next to the disused tracks.

If you want to continue driving or hiking on the Nordgraben, you have to cross the railway tracks at this point. There is no transition but almost no train traffic that you might notice in time. There is no other path along the Nordgraben that is more or less marked as a hiking trail by a blue and white sign with the number 16 and that is on the "Schöne Heimat" cycling map by Dr. Barthel Verlag is listed.
