South of the village of Eelde there is an archaeological monument: the 'Waterburcht van Eelde'. In the underground are the remains of a castle from the 13th century. But traces of it are also visible above ground. The motte-and-bailey castle of Eelde is a so-called motte-and-bailey castle. It probably consists of a wooden residential tower built on a raised mound (motte). The castle is surrounded by a system of several ramparts and moats, hence the name 'Waterburcht'. In the 17th and 18th centuries, a manor, called 'Therborch', stood on the site of the former moated castle. This is a stately home with farmlands around it. This manor house is first mentioned in 1646. It belongs to the Terborch family and probably derives its name from the location of the medieval moated castle.
