This German cemetery was on the front line. German bunkers can still be found on this site. Originally a British cemetery here at the beginning of the war. Germans were only able to take this sector at the end of April 1915 after a gas attack. They were able to keep the location until the summer of 1917. Afterwards, the area was recaptured by the Germans with the Spring Offensive in 1918. In the 1950s, Langemark became one of the 4 large collective cemeteries in Flanders. We visited this cemetery on a drizzly day with background music by Marlene Dietrich – “Sag Mir Wo Die Blumen Sind”. These lyrics are very appropriate for this cemetery, to make you very quiet…

The German military cemetery in Langemark is one of 4 German collective cemeteries in Belgium. This cemetery is also known as the 'Studentenfriedhof'. A number of young German volunteer soldiers were killed here during the First Battle of Ypres in 1914. More than 44,300 German soldiers are now buried here. More than half rest together in the comrade's grave near the entrance to the cemetery. About 17,000 soldiers from this mass grave could be identified. Their names can be found on the blocks around the comrade's grave.
