This street used to be called Rue aux Staux. In the 14th century, the most important butchers of the city lived here. Their guild was so powerful at the time that they were allowed to build a large meat hall on the Grand-Place to trade.
A legend tells that a few centuries earlier a witch had lived in the street and the name was changed.
According to the tales, the neighborhood was home to one Gadale, an old rag picker who indulged in witchcraft and received unsavory individuals at home. One evening the inhabitants of Jodoigne heard the noise of a quarrel and gathered in front of the witch's house. They saw La gandale come out, along with 5 crooks, grabbed the witch and hanged her. Although the story from A to Z was made up at the end of the 19th century, it may be a reference to the many witch trials of the 16th and 17th centuries, facts that have lingered in people's memories.
