The Zollern-Alb Observatory is located on the south-western edge of Brittheim, a district of Rosenfeld in the Zollernalb district in the foothills of the Swabian Jura. It is one of the largest public observatories in Germany. The first thoughts about building an observatory with modern equipment go back to the year 1996. The following year, a support association and an operating community were founded, which became part of the Verein Sternwarte Zollern-Alb, Rosenfeld-Brittheim e. V. passed. In 2004, the association received funds from the Baden-Württemberg State Foundation, from the city of Rosenfeld, the Zollernalb district and companies based in the district. After a planning and construction phase, the observatory was inaugurated on September 29, 2006. The observatory's main telescope is a Cassegrain telescope with an 80 cm primary mirror. The telescope can be used both in the primary focus with an aperture ratio of f/3 and in the secondary focus at f/10. A sun station and a deep sky station are planned. A radio astronomy station is under construction. There is a large lecture and conference room in the observatory building. A separate dome building with a 20 cm Newtonian telescope is used as a youth observatory. The focus is on communicating astronomical knowledge and research results and current events in the sky. Lectures and sky observations with the equipment of the observatory are offered for this purpose. Workshops are held regularly on special topics, some of which are also seasonal.[1] In addition, the observatory takes an active part in local and national exhibitions. Special tours, especially for schools and kindergartens, are an integral part of the observatory's educational offerings. For particularly interested young people, the observatory offers to work in its youth group.
