Narvik station is the terminus for the Ofotbanen passenger trains. The timetable is relatively thin and consists of a maximum of three connections per day between Narvik and Kiruna. There is no direct connection to the rest of the Norwegian rail network. The line was built primarily for freight traffic. With huge, long and heavy trains, the iron ore is brought from the Swedish Kiruna to the loading facility and loaded onto ships. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the port is ice-free all year round. This means that loading is possible all year round.
