Near the south entrance to St. Mary's Church, Rolf Goerler's little bronze devil sits

on a stone and scratches his beard with a friendly smile.

When it was installed, the bronze sculpture caused discussions among the believers.

It refers to a well-known Lübeck legend, the content of which is listed on a plaque. According to this, the people of Lübeck lied to the devil and told him that they would build an inn instead of St. Mary's Church.

This pleased the devil and he helped with the construction. Only shortly before the construction was completed did he discover the deception and wanted to destroy the church again with a huge stone. The people of Lübeck then assured him that they would build a nearby inn,

    today's Ratskeller.

The devil dropped the stone close to the church on which the little figure now sits.

Touching the horns is said to bring good luck and appease the devil.

When the foundations of St. Mary's Church were laid, the devil believed that a wine house was being built. He liked that because many souls had found their way to him via such a place. So he mingled with the workers and helped. No wonder the building grew amazingly fast. But one day the devil had to realize where the building was going and full of rage he brought a huge boulder to smash the church that had been started with it. He was already roaring through the air when a bold fellow called out to him:

"Hold on, Mr. Devil! Leave what's standing! We'll build you a tavern next to the church for it!"

That seemed better for the devil; he dropped the stone hard in front of the wall of the church. It is still there and clearly shows the impressions of the devil's claws, and the Ratsweinkeller was built right next to the church.

The devil (who sits at the church of St. Marien) was created from bronze in 1999 by the artist Rolf Goerler, who died in Lübeck in 2006.
