Sint-Carolus Borromeuskerk is a parish church and former Jesuit church in Baroque style.

The grand master 'Pieter Paul Rubens' made an important contribution to the decoration of the church, both with paintings and sculptures.

Definitely worth attending the painting change. The painting changes take place 3 times a year. Ash Wednesday – Easter and around August 15 Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Check the website and be sure to check it out, because it is a unique spectacle. The technique is almost 400 years old and it is still the only place, as far as I know, where the switching still takes place effectively.

The paintings are 5.35 meters high and 4 meters wide.

    Book and enjoy.

'Heaven on earth', 'the eighth wonder of the world'... in the 17th century, words were too short for this church that seems to stand on an Italian piazza. It was built (1615-1621) in the full Counter Reformation, for and by the Jesuits. As a painter-decorator-architect, Peter Paul Rubens had a hand in the tower, the facade, the high altar, the stucco ceilings and the Lady Chapel. The Saint Charles Borromeo church is the Rubens church par excellence, even though a fire destroyed its 39 ceiling paintings.

      art temple

Although this famous Jesuit church has lost much of its artistic decorum over time, it remains a true temple of art. The Sint-Carolus Borromeuskerk is a textbook example of Baroque church architecture. The eye-catcher is the original still-functioning mechanism above the main altar that allows the paintings to be exchanged: an impressive spectacle!

      Return of painting Rubens

The painting by Rubens 'The Return of the Holy Family' recently returned to the Sint-Carolus Borromeus Church, it was donated to the church in 1620 by the Antwerp mayor Nicolaas Rockox and was given a place above the altar. After a series of wanderings, the work was acquired in 1871 by the Metropolitan Museum in New York. In 2012, it came back into the possession of the Carolus Borromeus Church through an auction at Christie's. After a thorough restoration, it can now be admired in the place for which it was made, after 220 years!

The Sint-Carolus Borromeuskerk has been one of the most beautiful examples of Baroque in the Low Countries for 400 years.

In the perfect acoustics of this church, the Artist's Mass has been resounding on every Sunday and public holiday for more than 75 years, a mass with live music by different musicians from home and abroad. Everyone can attend this free of charge, always at 11:30 am.
