In the middle of the square is the green statue of Brabo, Antwerp's most famous mythical figure. According to legend, Brabo killed the giant, who demanded excessive tolls from the boatmen who wanted to enter the city via the waterway. If they could not pay, the giant chopped off their hands. The statue shows Brabo throwing the giant's hand into the Scheldt.
