The Salzkammergut has always been considered a nativity scene landscape. In the 19th century, especially in Ebensee, a new type of nativity scene developed, the "Ebensee landscape nativity scene". At that time, simple, talented local people - mostly woodcutters or panhands (salt workers) - knew how to carve nativity figures. These natural talents called themselves "Schnegerer".
