The small town of Scheibenberg in the Upper Ore Mountains takes its name from the table-shaped basalt mountain of the same name on its northwest side. It is said to be inhabited by dwarves and to contain rich treasures. So it happened that in 1605, M. Lorenz Schwabe, a priest in Scheibenberg, had several guests from Annaberg with him and his wife led several of her friends over and around the Scheibenberg to show them the area. They came across a hole in it, into which three steps led, and in it lay a shiny lump like glowing gold. This frightened them, they hurried back in and led the priest and the guests out, but could not find the hole again.

However, there is also a kind of cave on the east side of the mountain, called the Dwarf Hole. According to legend, many dwarves lived there, whose king was called Oronomassan (according to others, Zembokral). They were not more than two feet tall and wore very brightly coloured skirts and panties. It seemed that their greatest pleasure was to tease people; but they also did many a good deed and helped pious and poor people in particular. One winter a poor girl from Schlettau went into the forest at the foot of the Scheibenberg to fetch wood. There she met a little man with a golden crown on his head, that was Oronomassan. He greeted the girl and called out very pitifully: "Oh, dear maiden, take me with you in your basket! I am so tired and it is snowing and so cold and I know of no place to stay! So take me with you to your house!" The girl did not know the dwarf king at all, but as he begged so imploringly, she put him in her basket and put her apron over him so that the snow would not fall on his head. Then she put the basket on her back and started back. But the little man in the basket weighed a ton and she had to summon all her strength so that the load did not crush her. When she got home, she put the basket down, panting, and wanted to look at the little man in it, so she took off her apron. But who can describe her joyful surprise? The little man was gone and in his place there was a large lump of solid silver in the basket.
