The Fountain of the Three Graces is a monumental fountain that has been located in the center of the Place de la Bourse in Bordeaux since 1869.
The bronze statue represents the three Graces (Charites in Greek mythology): Aglae, Euphrosyne and Thalia. These daughters of Zeus and Eurynome evoke beauty (Aglae), joy (Euphrosyne), and abundance (Thalie). This theme was very common in cities during times of prosperity and there are Fountains of the Three Graces in Montpellier, Nice, Langrune-sur-Mer, Guéret, Vezzani...
The base is made of Jurassic marble, the basin is made of cast iron.
According to some, the sculptor took inspiration for the faces of the three statues from three rulers of the time: Empress Eugenie, Queen Isabella of Spain and Queen Victoria of England.
