In 838, Emperor Ludwig the Pious gave the Carolingian estate "Reni" to the Benedictine convent of Herford. Noble administrators were the gentlemen von Hake and von Valke, who gave the farm its name.
The “villa Reni”, which was later called Falkenhof, was probably built under the Carolingians. The urban development of Rheine began from here. In 838, Emperor Ludwig the Pious donated the farm to the Imperial Abbey of Herford, which owned it for almost a millennium and leased it exclusively to noble families. The property got its name from the Falke tenant family. The oldest surviving building structure from the 16th century includes the gatehouse and the vaulted hall of the central building. The current appearance of the baroque three-wing complex with the outside staircase and the striking pigeon fountain dates back to the middle of the 18th century.
THE MUSEUM ROOMS
Urban history, art and cultural history are our main topics. The city's development can be followed in the museum from the 9th century to the beginnings of the textile industry in Rheine. Archaeological finds from prehistory and early history provide insight into how our ancestors lived before the city was founded. Biedermeier living culture and works by artists born in Rheine such as Carlo Mense can also be seen.
The historic Morrien Hall with its rare painted wooden ceiling from the 17th century is a reminder of the history of the house. The attic, which was previously used as a granary, now houses the museum's extensive graphic collection. Art from the Middle Ages to modern times is shown in the Kasimir Hagen Collection, which arose from a private passion for collecting.
A renovation in 2003 finally brought to light a sensation in the listed building: underground passages were discovered and in them thousands of shards that the previous aristocratic residents had disposed of. After their restoration, these special testimonies of life can now be seen again in their authentic location: from the leather children's shoes to the painted pancake plate to the delicate Venetian-style wine glasses.
