The ramparts and canals are well preserved and are now home to rare plants and animals. A walking path now runs over a large part of the ramparts.

Hiking

The earthen walls around Retranchement were built in 1607, during the 80 years war (1568-1648), to protect the Zwin canal against the Spanish. The old ramparts have now been conquered by nature and constitute a lovely destination for a walk.
