  • Built by Joseph Effner between 1716 and 1719, the little castle served as a resting place for Elector Maximilian Emanuel while playing mail, a French ball game that was popular at the time, similar to golf. To the south of the castle was a garden parterre, to the north was the track for the game. The interior is decorated in an Asian style with silk and rice straw wallpaper, Japanese lacquer paintings and chinoiserie. The octagonal building is reminiscent of an Ottoman pavilion (serail). The name Pagoda Castle is derived from the numerous small Chinese figures of gods, which were generally referred to as pagodas at the time. The ground floor of the building consists of a single room. The upper floor consists of a relaxation room, a Chinese cabinet and a Chinese salon. The walls of the octagonal “Salettl” on the ground floor are decorated with Dutch tiles.
