The existing Berlin AEG factories, such as those on Ackerstrasse and Brunnenstrasse, were built in the historicist style and were often known as "crenellated city castles." With the goal of designing an impressive and sophisticated building on a grand scale, Peter Behrens created a new industrial architecture that no longer hid behind historicist facades.
The building has been a listed building since 1956 and was restored in 1978. On Huttenstrasse (south side), there is a sign belonging to the then owner, Kraftwerk Union, with information on the construction, architects, monument protection, and restoration.
