The Oude Haven, as the Wijnhaven used to be called, played a central role in shipping and the (wine) trade in the city, and helped ensure that Dordrecht grew into the most prosperous and powerful city in the country. The many buildings on the monumental Wijnstraat still bear witness to this. (Photo: Dordrecht Regional Archives)Napoleon docked at the Groothoofd on Saturday, October 5, 1811. The Dordrecht authorities were probably still alert when Napoleon's yacht arrived between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. The French emperor immediately changed into a sloop and was rowed via the Wijnhaven to the Voorstraatshaven. There he met the hastily rushed notables, who exhausted themselves in apologizing.
