"... The forerunner of the later Roland colliery was founded in 1841, right on the city limits between Oberhausen and Mülheim an der Ruhr in what is now the Oberhausen-Dümpten district. The colliery is named after the owner of an estate called Rohland Area between today's streets Rolanddamm and Dümpter Kamp. From 1857, the Rolandbahn connected the colliery with today's Oberhausen train station for the purpose of loading the extracted raw material. Despite severe economic losses in World War I, the Roland II shaft was sunk at this time With decline and the change in demand for hard coal, the Roland colliery closed its doors in 1928. All above-ground facilities were demolished and the shafts filled in by 1937. After the Second World War, Concordia AG bought the site in 1951 in order to purchase the deposits from the Concordia colliery open up and reactivate shaft II. So it looked initially after a renaissance for the Roland colliery. In 1958, a new headframe was even erected on this shaft. The project was first stopped due to the coal crisis and discontinued in 1968 - together with the closure of the colliery.

On the site of the Roland colliery, the overburden was piled up in a mighty (local residents mentioned a 50 meters or higher jutting out over the surrounding area) mine dump that reached up to the colliery buildings. Today the Roland heap, often also referred to as Rolandhalde, is hardly noticeable as a mining heap. The miserable remnant towers just under six meters above the surrounding area and has an absolute height of a maximum of around 50 meters above sea level. On the area of the Roland Halde, which was flattened and greatly reduced in size in the 1980s, a small city park has been created, aptly named Stadtpark Rolandhalde - practically the only reference by name to the former overburden mountain. Part of the dump is also taken up by the newly created row house settlement Rolandsfeld in the north and an allotment garden in the south. ... "
