Formerly NewMetropolis, NEMO was designed in 1997 by architect Renzo Piano. According to Piano, the building is a 'reflection of the cross-section of the IJ tunnel' that runs underneath. NEMO, now the largest science museum in the Netherlands, was in danger of going bankrupt at the end of the last century. And because an association with shipping was already made in the former harbor of the Oosterdok, the museum was nicknamed 'Sinking Ship'.
