The harbor is located on the east side of Sylt and is therefore not exposed to the swell of the North Sea. Since the construction of the Hindenburg Dam and the Rømødæmningen, it can only be reached via the Lister Tief. The average tidal range is 1.8 m and the harbor basin does not dry out.
