Location: Freiburg District, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Freiburg residents like to call the area between Gerberau and Fischerau, through which the commercial canal runs, "Little Venice." Fishermen, tanners, millers, and other craftsmen who needed water once worked there. This water is channeled from the Dreisam River into the city via an ingenious system and once supplied local businesses. Flooding never occurs in the commercial canal because the water supply to the commercial canal can be regulated along the Dreisam River. A detour to Little Venice is always worthwhile. 😀

Little Venice, Freiburg im Breisgau
The picturesque facades of the old houses with their flower-adorned windows are reflected in the clear waters of the Gerberau and Fischerau streams. While ducks quack and drift in the gently babbling streams, sparrows hop happily along the narrow cobblestone paths. Freiburgers affectionately call these idyllic alleys between Martinstor and Schwabentor Little Venice.Once known as the "Snail Suburb," artisans from various trades lived and worked in this district. To practice their trades, millers, tanners, and fishermen needed the water of the Dreisam, and so, using an ingenious system, this valuable resource was channeled via several canals to the businesses located here. From the so-called "Island" with its oil mill, the streams, which are much deeper and wider here than in the rest of the city, meander through the Fischerau and Gerberau.
Enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and stroll through the alleys in the sunshine, past small galleries, cozy cafés, and unusual shops, such as the Barleben hand puppet shop. It's home to the playful terrier Lutz, the rat Hein Tüddel, and Mr. Räudenfell. Beware, the fox is a real smart aleck and can talk visitors into the ground.Text / Source: City of Freiburg, Rathausplatz 2-4, 79098 Freiburg

The two picturesque alleys of Gerberau and Fischerau run parallel to each other, so you can't avoid walking the same route twice. The same applies to the fishermen who gave Fischerau its name.Gerberau and Fischerau both belong to the so-called Schneckenvorstadt (snail suburb).(Source: cityrundgang.de)
