The moated castle in the heart of Großsachsenheim looks back on an eventful history! A fortified castle can be traced to this site as early as 1200. However, it wasn't until the end of the 13th century that the lords and knights of Sachsenheim moved their main residence here. The castle acquired its present Renaissance-style appearance after a fire in 1544, when it had to be rebuilt. The new building soon came into the possession of the House of Württemberg. Since the 19th century, it has changed hands several times over among private owners. In 1952, the town of Großsachsenheim purchased the castle and converted it into its town hall. After nearly five years of extensive renovations, this gem has been open to the public again as the town hall and administrative center since 2020.

Instead of a previous castle from the 11th century occupied by the State Monuments Office, a castle with a verifiable keep on the south wing was built here in the 13th century as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Sachsenheim. Converted to a castle, the complex now forms an almost regular dodecagon with a square inner courtyard and a former moat on the outside

The "Klopferle" can be found to the left of the main entrance to the moated castle. A wild man who, according to legend, was responsible for the fire in the first castle in 1542.
