This national monument was built in 1836. However, the stones of this tunnel are older. These come from the old Lutheran church. This was in Winschoterzijl. This was far outside Winschoten. After the Reformation, around 1600, this Protestant movement was also not wanted. After 1800 a Lutheran church was built in the center of Winschoten. German bricklayers, plasterers and (farm) workers from the area made extensive use of this church.
