When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, joy was also great in far-away Japan. So big that the TV station Asahi organized a nationwide fundraiser. With the collected donations money, Japanese cherry trees were planted along the wall. Within a very short time, over one million euros were added.
Beginning in 1990, cherry trees were planted piece by piece along the Berlin Wall and other prominent places in Berlin. In April and May, the traditional hanami, 'looking at the cherry blossoms', is celebrated here.
