On April 17, 1890, the "old" town hall, built in 1739, fell victim to a fire. A new building was planned and the new town hall was inaugurated on November 22, 1897. At the same time, a new imperial post office was integrated into the building. At that time, a restaurant was set up on the ground floor of the town hall part. The savings bank later used this as business premises. Today the premises are completely used by the city administration. The architect of the brick building was Theodor Kösser. He also designed the Mädlerpassage in Leipzig.
