The two original mills were converted into one mill. It has been preserved and a housing complex was built around it.

The Dijlemolens are located in an area where several watermills once stood on the two arms/banks of the Dijle that come together a little further on (behind the Dijlepark).

The area also has a long history and is even said to be the place where the Frankish prince Arnulf of Carinthia defeated the Vikings who had arrived near "Loven" via the Scheldt and Dijle at the end of the ninth century. The first Count of Leuven, Lambert I, then settled at this location at the end of the tenth century and shortly afterwards at the ducal site. And a few centuries later the Beguines settled here on the edge of the city.

The many watermills that came here over time naturally ensured a lot of activity. An overview, "The mills of the Redingeneiland", by the Leuven Historical Society and Natuurpunt Leuven, shows an old cadastral map from 1830 on which the various mills (some combined) are located: the Vorstemolen, Graetmolen and Schorsmolen together are the Begijnemolens. The Graetmolen and Schorsmolen stood on the site of the current Dijlemolens and went up in flames in the nineteenth century. Other mills that were located here: the Redingenmolen, the Boemalemolen, the Corbekemolen, the Vliegmolen, the Schorsmolen, the Vorstemolen and the Cropelmolen.

A precursor of the Dijlemolens, so to speak, the Graetmolen, built in the thirteenth century, a few years after the foundation of the Begijnhof (not by beguines). It was first owned by patrician families for many centuries, then by the Druitsiuscollege and even later by the miller family Janssens (in 1795). In 1884 the old mill was demolished and in 1930 the location and remains of the Graetmolen, Schorsmolen and Graetmolen (together the Begijnenmolens) formed the basis for an industrial mill. This was built by the Huybrechts brothers. Finally, in 1979 this mill was completely converted into a residential complex that subsequently underwent renovations and, in addition to housing, also houses businesses and catering establishments.

Behind the mills lies a small park, the Dijlepark, where it is also pleasant to stay for those seeking peace and quiet. On the information board (see photos) you can also see some very simplified explanations about the origin of the mill. Also take a look inside the building.
