It was an unfortified border that separated the Frankish sphere of influence
in Saxon North Albingia from the area of the Slavic Abodrites from around 809.
The Limes Saxoniae, i.e. the "border of Saxony" with the Abodrites, was agreed by Charlemagne in 809 during his last stay in northern Germany by treaty with the Abodrites, when the Eider was also established as the northern border of the empire.
