The so-called lake at Terhills originated from the old gravel pits and excavations of the Eisden Mine, which together with the slag heaps formed the 'mountains and lakes' landscape that was transformed into a tourist hotspot as part of the Hoge Kempen National Park, with a section on the side of the "resort" offering water sports and more recreation, and on the other side (east and at the foot of the slag heaps) more natural-looking areas, a focus on walks and more waterfowl and nature.
