The old mine shaft is a silent witness to the industrial past. The former mine at Eisden was a hard working place until 1987 - you could see it, but also smell and hear it. But now you can enjoy the tranquility of nature to the fullest.

You can climb up the headframe of the former hard coal mine in Eisden. – After all, the height here is twelve meters! On the ground floor you can get an impression of the past of this mine in a photo exhibition.

The headstocks you will find here are made of concrete. This is in contrast to the metal constructions elsewhere in Limburg. They were completely rebuilt. One of the two headframes (the first one you see from the visitor center) is accessible almost to the top.

Also take a look at the photos from the past hanging downstairs (in chronological order). With a guide ('ranger') you will learn a lot about the construction of the shafts, the elevators, the "laundry", the mine itself and its entire history, including interesting anecdotes.

For example, Queen Elisabeth visited the mine in 2022 in...white shoes and a white cloth, they clearly had no idea what it was like. The mine could start before WW I, but the Germans used just about everything they could from the mine for their 1914-1918 campaign.

By the way, did you know that the elevators almost dropped to fall speed? Another fact: in order to make the concrete anchorages in the damp subsoil, they first had to be processed so that it froze.

The western headframe of the former Eisden mine was converted into the Visitor Center of the Hoge Kempen National Park.

Those who choose Terhills as a base for exploring the National Park will be guided through the headframe, with a cafeteria, shop and information center on the ground floor.

The existing wooden reception building has been preserved but has a different function.
