The first Brigitte Bridge was built between 1871 and 1873 and a new one was planned in 1900, but was repeatedly postponed! The urgent new construction did not begin until 1924 and was completed in 1926. The Wehrmacht blew up many of the Danube bridges in April 1945. But here only the middle section was damaged and within 4 weeks the Red Army made it usable for pedestrians again.
From 1969 to 1971 the roadway was widened and tram tracks laid.
