Prince Frederik acquired Backershagen in 1846. He converted the Deer House into a playhouse for his daughter Marie.
The municipality of Wassenaar bought Backershagen in 1955, including the Hertenhuisje that served as a home. Anti-squatters have been staying there since the residents left at the end of 2018.
At the end of 2020, Het Hertenhuisje was sold by the municipality of Wassenaar. It is now privately owned.
