Unveiled in 2012, the Famine Ship Memorial began as a memorial to Celia Griffin, who died of starvation in Galway during the Great Famine in 1847. Celia Griffin represents all children who died and the memorial is symbolic of them all. The two sail like structures on either side of the memorial list the names of 100 ships that set sail from Galway between 1847 and 1850 carrying refugees escaping the famine across the Atlantic.

On the edge of the bay at Grattan Road, you will find the poignant Celia Griffin Memorial Park, a tribute to the victims of the Great Famine. This monument, shaped like the bow of a 'famine ship', commemorates the thousands of desperate people who crossed the Atlantic Ocean from the port of Galway in search of a new life.
