Initially, there was a Romanesque St. Nicholas Chapel in Nerem. This stood northwest of the current church and was built of flint and marlstone. In 1839, the St. Nicholas Chapel was demolished. In 1876, a new Neo-Romanesque church was built, designed by A. Castermans.
